6 Botox Myths Debunked

When it comes to minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, Botox tops the popularity list with 6.7 million procedures done in 2015. Botox is becoming a common and quick pick-me-up, and the number of procedures still continues to grow. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of Botox procedures done in the 15 years between 2000 and 2015 rose a staggering 759 percent.

If you're considering an injection, it’s first important to remove the fiction from the facts. The mythology surrounding Botox runs deep and can easily scare a potential patient away from this often beneficial treatment. Whether you read something on a blog, had a friend tell you about their sister's co-worker's mother's experience, or heard some other rumor, take a look at some of the most common Botox myths and the truths behind them.

1. It's an Immediate Fix

Many people have a vision of walking in to the office, getting a few shots, and walking out as a new person. However, even though Botox works well to reduce to appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it doesn't work immediately. While every patient is different (and may have different experiences), Botox typically starts taking effect in three to five days. It may take a week or more to see even greater results.

2. Botox Removes Wrinkles

Even though Botox does diminish your fine lines, it doesn't technically take them away. At least, not in a permanent way. The injections soften the appearance of lines and wrinkles, making it seem like they have vanished or gotten smaller. But if you stop the treatments, the lines will reappear. This makes Botox a semi-permanent procedure. If you like the results, you can continue getting injections to see your wrinkles smooth away. If not, you can stop treatments.

3. Deeper Wrinkles Appear

What happens if you stop using Botox? You may have heard that your wrinkles and lines come back with a vengeance. This isn't true. The absence of Botox won't worsen your line situation. If you choose to stop treatment, your face will go back to its natural state.

Keep in mind that if you've been getting Botox for several years, you may naturally have more or deeper lines than you did prior to treatment. So the Botox isn't causing your lines to deepen—age is.

You may have also gotten used to the look of your face with smoother lines. This doesn't mean that the resulting lines (after stopping injections) are any worse than before. More likely, it means that you're noticing the contrast between your face with and without Botox.

4. Injections Are for Any Age

There is some truth in this myth. There's a wide age range when it comes to acceptable cosmetic facial use. Botox is FDA-approved for patients ages 18 to 65. That said, younger women in their late teens aren't always the best candidates for Botox. If you're 18, 19, or even in your very early 20s, the doctor may advocate for waiting until you are headed towards 30. Unless used for a medical (and not cosmetic) reason, Botox isn't appropriate for teenagers under 18.

5. Treatments Work on All Types of Lines

Cosmetically injectable botulinum toxin is only FDA-approved for certain uses. Brand-name Botox is approved to treat frown lines and crow's feet, while brand-name Dysport and Xeomin only have approval to treat frown lines.

6. Botox Is for Women Only

There's no reason that women should benefit from this minimally invasive cosmetic procedure and men not do the same. Even though more women get Botox than men, this injectable is made for both sexes. While some men may feel a stigma surrounding Botox use, they can enjoy similar benefits to women when using it.

Glowing skin can give you the appearance of being healthy and lend a more youthful look to your countenance. As skin ages, however, collagen production slows and your skin can take on a ruddy appearance. Exposure to the sun throughout your lifetime can give the skin a rough texture that detracts from your natural beauty.

Addressing these problems with cosmetic dermatology can be a simple and effective way to restore your skin's youthful glow. You have many procedures available to correct skin problems, but one of the most versatile cosmetic dermatology procedures practiced today is intense pulsed light (IPL) photorejuvenation.

IPL photorejuvenation can offer some unique benefits when improving the tone and texture of aging or sun-damaged skin. Learn more about IPL photorejuvenation and the improvement it brings to your skin.

Thin lips can be a result of simple genetics. Your lips also naturally thin as you age as they lose collagen and natural fat, resulting in longer, less-defined lips than you'd like. If you want a perkier, fuller pout, you may wonder if lip augmentation will work well for you.

Permalip is a type of permanent implant that is placed in the lip tissue (similar to the way a breast implant works) to give the recipient a fuller, more youthful smile. It is a permanent solution and can be semi-customized as the soft silicone implant comes in varying sizes. The implants also do not rupture or leak, giving you peace of mind that you are selecting a cosmetic solution that will last.

Before choosing a plastic surgeon  and imagining your pucker thick and full, you first need to make sure you are a candidate for lip enhancement.

Your skin can begin to lose its elasticity and show signs of aging as early as your twenties. While using certain skin care products containing vitamin E and other essential nutrients can help slow down aging skin, they won't halt the process entirely.

Fine lines around the lips, deep furrows around the brows and sagging skin along the jowls can betray your age and make you look older. You may think you have to go under the knife to reverse the effects of aging, but there are nonsurgical procedures you can take advantage of to give your skin the youthful appeal you desire. Discover some of these treatments here.
